University College Cork The college, which has a student body of roughly 10,000, is a constituent of the National University of Ireland. This center of learning is housed in a pretty quadrangle of Gothic Revival-style buildings. Colorful gardens and wooded grounds grace the campus. A tour of the grounds takes in the Crawford Observatory, the Harry Clarke stained-glass windows in the Honan Chapel, and the Stone Corridor, a collection of stones inscribed with the ancient Irish ogham style of writing. The main quadrangle is a fine example of 19th-century university architecture in the Tudor-Gothic style, reminiscent of many Oxford and Cambridge colleges. Several ancient ogham stones are on display, as are occasional exhibitions of archival material from the old library. The Honan Collegiate Chapel, east of the quadrangle, was built in 1916 and modeled on the 12th-century, Hiberno-Romanesque style, best exemplified by the remains of Cormac's Chapel at Cashel. Go west out of the city along Washington Street go through the first the first two traffic lights, pass Jury's hotel an the Muskerry Garage on your left turn left at the third traffic lights by the old college gates. Go up Donovan's hill, past the Honan chapel on your right at the top of the hill turn right at college road. The main entrance to UCC is 200m down college road on your right.
