One day by accident while moving a catering sized fridge, a blocked doorway was found. Eric the Maintenance Manager was asked to arrange for the removal of the boarding over the mystery entrance. On doing so, what was discovered but Lady Mabel Crawford’s Old Kitchen and Pantry, dating back some 150 years! The House before it was a Hotel was home to Lord & Lady Crawford, founders of the Beamish Brewery.

Mabel Crawford’s offers modern Irish and European Cuisine, in a unique and original setting, at very affordable prices and with friendly yet professional service. The bistro aims to appeal to all generations, and is a family friendly venue with a kids menu designed by local kids, and a diverse menu offering coeliac friendly dishes as standard. Some dishes on the menu will include Crispy Confit of Duck with a haricot Blanc and a Port reduction , Poached Fillet of Cod served with a Chunky Provencal sauce and Topped with crispy leeks, Roast Loin of Rosemary Scented Lamb, Served on a Smooth Carrot & Parsnip Butter Mash, served with a Homemade Wine Jus Reduction , and Warm Carrot Cake with a Hazelnut Marmalade syrup and nutmeg Mascarpone Cream. Delicious!
Mabel Crawford’s occupies several interconnecting rooms and spaces, at the back of the old Mansion, each space with its own character, offering diners plenty of booth space and private corners and sections for larger family tables as well as discrete tables for two. A huge hearth from the original Kitchen dominates the central room. Mabel’s showcases several other fire places and quirky features such as an old safe, cubbyholes, a glass doored walk in wine cellar and a strangely placed window high up on one of the bistros walls oddly looking up into a hidden spiral staircase!
